This is the largest canyon in Europe. 170 km long and 5 km deep, this submarine canyon enables the formation of gigantic waves, up to 35 metres high! One of the most famous and beautiful panoramas of the Portuguese coast, that can be seen from the top of Sítio. This impressive rock measuring 318 m and facing the sea is accessible on foot or by funicular.
Nazaré is a typical fishing village, with a mild climate and beautiful beaches. The deep connection between the locals and the sea is reflected in craftsmanship, typical clothing, cooking and surfing. Thanks to the underwater geomorphological phenomenon known as the Nazaré Canyon, this Portuguese village is now world famous.
Located in Quinta dos Loridos (Bombarral), just 30 km from Peniche, Buddha Eden is the largest oriental garden in Europe. Covering 35 hectares of land, this incredible garden is an open-air gallery with more than 200 sculptures and statues, surrounded by the shade of 1000 palm trees. Buddhas, pagodas and terracotta statues have been lovingly incorporated into these gardens. It is estimated that more than six thousand tons of marble and granite were used to create this unique and magnificent work of art.
A lake with Koi fish and 600 hand-painted terracotta soldiers are just 2 more reasons to visit this enchanting place, where visitors can enjoy the combination of modernity and antiquity, with the peace and tranquillity that only nature can offer.
The picturesque village of Óbidos is one of the oldest medieval cities in Portugal. Just 25 km from Peniche, an amazing and well-preserved castle lies inside the walls, where you can stroll through a labyrinth of narrow alleys, between white houses and beautiful churches surrounded by remnants of different civilisations. Numerous examples of religious and civil architecture from the golden era of the city provide plenty of reasons to visit.
Óbidos is also famous for its many events held throughout the year. The Medieval Fair (July/August) enables visitors to discover and experience the costumes and traditions of medieval times, giving you the impression of travelling back in time. Other events such as the Chocolate Festival, Holy Week or the Christmas city enhance even further a visit to this beautiful city. The traditional Ginjinha drink, a cherry liqueur, served in a cup of chocolate, will make this experience even sweeter.
The incredible Berlengas archipelago is only a 20-minute boat ride away. It is composed of 3 small groups of islands: Berlenga Grande, Estelas and Farilhões-Forcadas. The translucent waters, wealth of fauna and flora and many underwater discoveries make this place a natural sanctuary, ideal for free diving.
These islands have a unique ecosystem, with their own particular fauna and flora, which were recognised with the creation of the Berlenga Natural Reserve in 1981. The main island is the largest. Known as Berlenga Grande, it is the only one that can be visited, and only during the bathing season from May to September.
Just 4 km from the resort, the beautiful town of Peniche is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. It is one of the most important fishing grounds in Portugal. On a 10 km peninsula, which includes Cabo Carvoeiro in its westernmost end, the city of Peniche is definitely worth a visit. The entire coast is formed by reefs, with many beaches that reaching out into the ocean, with large stretches of sand.
The bays of Consolação and Baleal are perfect for a family day, while Supertubos beach is famous for its large, tubular waves, ideal for surfing.
